Mini Home Building Factories Could Save Housing
February 28, 2024
Cuby Technologies has been designing and building specialized machines that can handle almost all aspects of building a home. They are deploying these machines at scale by building mini-inflatable roof factories on location which house the equipment, machinery and personnel. The company is based out of Belarus, but the way they are thinking about home building is applicable on a world scale. By using machines, they're decreasing specialized labour costs and by having the factories next door to construction sites, they're reducing transportation costs and labour involved in transporting supplies.
Cuby says the houses can be manufactured and assembled on-site in just 30 days using only four unskilled workers in two shifts. This results in up to a 30% reduction in building costs compared to traditional methods.
In a place like Canada where there is a skilled labour shortage in home construction, and costs are prohibitive, this is the type of thinking and innovation that will be required to help us get out of this housing rut. As we remove more red tape and bureaucracy from the home building process, we also need to address how we build from first principles as Cuby is doing. Especially as building costs continue to soar every year.
